As in many parts of the world, Cusco participates in the celebration of Holy Week considering it a period of spiritual recollection, remembering the life, passion and death of Jesus. Next, we give you a guide of all the events that you will be able to appreciate in the beautiful city of Cusco during Holy Week.

Domingo de Ramos

The faithful attend the different parishes of the city carrying palm leaves and woven crosses of the same plant, which are blessed in the Eucharistic celebrations of the different temples of the city and then take them to the houses and place them behind the doors, as a symbol of protection for the home.

Holy Monday

This is effectively the most important day of the Holy Week festivities and includes the famous Procession of ‘El Señor de los Temblores’ (The Lord of Earthquakes).The procession begins in the afternoon in the Basilica of the Cathedral and consecrates the image of the Lord of the Earthquakes. The faithful accompany him for six hours on his tour of the Plaza de Armas of Cusco and adjacent streets

This saint is of particular importance to the people of Cusco after the figure of this saint was brought out from the cathedral to successfully end a powerful earthquake whose successive tremors were demolishing the city back in 1650.

Holy Thursday

The Holy Week continues with “Jueves Santo”. In the Basilica of the Cathedral, the Archbishop washes the feet of twelve elders, in memory of the washing of Jesus to his apostles, while the families gather to enjoy the “twelve plates” remembering the “Last dinner. Here you can see the mix of dishes from Andean and Western cuisine, while in the Plaza San Francisco and the Mercado Central you can buy sweets such as crunchy “maicillos”, sponge cakes, sighs, “empanadas” and other delicacies of the traditional Cusco pastry. At night, the families walk through the streets and squares of the Historic Center on the route of the “Seven churches” that remember the falls of Jesus on his way to Calvary.

Holy Friday

From the temple of San Francisco begins the procession of the Cross that ends at dawn on the hill of Sacsayhuaman, at the foot of the White Christ.

In parallel, during this spiritual and religious date; in the markets and some places the Hanpi Qhatuy “or Hanpi Rantikuy” is carried out, it is a popular fair attended by many farmers bringing from their communities, medicinal plants, becoming the scenario of ancestral knowledge for the natural treatment of diseases .

Saturday of Glory and Sunday of Resurrection

On the night of “Saturday of Glory” the different parishes celebrate “The ceremony of light”, a prelude to “Easter Sunday” with which the “Holy Week” is finished
